Comparing Wet and Dry Sprinkler Systems

A fire can happen anywhere, and you need to be ready to deal with it in case one pops up in your place of work. Installing the right kind of sprinkler system makes life easier and keeps people more comfortable, so you and your customers can be at ease. Continue reading for a comparison of wet and dry sprinkler systems.

Wet Systems

A sprinkler uses water by definition, but there’s a difference between wet and dry systems. These two types of fire protection systems operate differently, so you should understand each one before you choose one for your home or place of business. A wet sprinkler system is one that has pressurized water at the ready at all times. Then when a fire breaks out and the sprinklers are triggered, water will start to spray out immediately. Wet systems are the most common, as they’re easy to install and maintain.

Dry Systems

Unlike wet sprinkler systems, dry systems don’t have water ready to go in the piping. What they do have in the piping is pressurized air. This keeps the water supply farther away from the sprinkler itself, so when a fire breaks out, the air pressure drops so the water can be released. This is beneficial if you live in a cold climate where the water might freeze in the pipes, and it’s also helpful for warehouses and walk-in refrigerators.

The Right Choice

The right choice for your fire protection needs depends on your circumstances. Wet systems are easier to use, but dry systems are better for cold environments. Ask your professional for help if you’re having trouble deciding.
