Dos and Don’ts of Keeping a Working Fire Protection System

You definitely need a life safety system for your company or commercial building, and a working fire protection system is a key component of one. It’s essential to be able to rely on this line of defense, and regular maintenance can keep it functioning properly. The use of emergency lighting, regular testing of your systems, and working with licensed, professional technicians are all essential to your safety. Read ahead for more on the dos and don’ts of keeping a working fire protection system.

DO Use Emergency Lighting

When a fire breaks out and time is of the essence, you need to be able to act quickly. This means you need to be able to see where you’re going and what you’re doing, which is why you should have emergency lighting. There’s no guarantee that your normal lighting will stay on during an emergency. Everything from a lightning storm to a flood could take your power down, making it difficult to find a fire extinguisher or even the exit to your building. Emergency lighting shows people where to go.

DON’T Forget to Test

Your fire protection system needs to be functioning to protect you. Just because it was working fine six months ago doesn’t mean that it still is, even though you haven’t had to use it to find out. Have your fire extinguishers and emergency lighting tested monthly, and have your fire protection system tested at least once a year to make sure they’ll all work when you need them.

DO Work with a Technician

It’s not always easy to make sure your fire protection system is working while juggling other tasks, but it’s an important responsibility. Working with a licensed, professional technician will ensure that your extinguishers, emergency lighting, and fire sprinkler system are all ready for use should you ever have to rely on them.
